Wondering About My Cameras?
People often ask which camera I use. So here’s a brief rundown of my cameras: Camera #1 - Nikon D100 My primary camera is a 6 Megapixel Nikon D100 Digital SLR.
I’ve had it about five years. The D100 was introduced in July 2002, so it’s getting a little “long in the tooth,” but it still does a great job for me. So I’ll keep it until it dies and replace it with whatever is of equivalent quality - probably a D200. It also has a Vertical Grip - which I almost never use! I have two lenses - a Nikkor 28-105mm zoom (with macro), and a Tamron 19-35mm, 3.5-4.5. Also a five-year-old Nikon Speedlight SB 80DX (forerunner to the SB 600 and SB 800 that are now available). My off-camera flash bracket is a Stroboframe QuickFlip 350 with a Nikon SC28 flash cable. Tripod - A Manfrotto (Bogen) 3021 with a 3265 pistol grip head. Some people (who shall remain nameless!) make fun of my old, out-of-date camera. And, of course I’d like to update what I have. There are always going to be new and better cameras and accesories. But for now, I’m happy with this outfit. It’s travelled all over the place with me, withstood salt spray and rain, been dropped a couple of times ...and it just keeps on working.

Camera #2 - Canon S3is My current “pocket camera” is a Canon S3is that I bought in December 2006.
6 megapixels, 12x optical zoom, Image Stabilization - with a full array of automatic and manual settings. If you can still find one, these are great all-around cameras, and the price is right! Originally $399 they’re going now for $200 or less because the S3IS has been replaced by the S5IS (MSRP-$499). The S5is is 8 megapixels, uses the Digic III software (Canon’s latest), and comes with a hotshoe for attaching an external Canon flash (which is one feature I’d really love to have on the S3). But still ... the S3is continues to amaze me. It’s outstanding in every way - with one exception: the electronic rangefinder is pretty grainy and contrasty. So you just have to compose and shoot - trusting that the real image is a lot better than what you’re seeing through the rangefinder. Still, this is the camera I never go anywhere without! And did I mention that it also shoots really great video? It does!
