Wondering About My Cameras?
People often ask which camera I use. So here’s a brief rundown of my cameras: Camera #1 - Nikon D80 My primary camera is a 10.1 Megapixel Nikon D80 Digital SLR.
It’s not the top of the line by a long shot, but it’s doing everything I need it to do right now. Never one to carry around a lot of hardware, I carry only two lenses - my trusty Nikkor 28-105 (with macro) and my absolutely brilliant Nikkor 17-35, f/2.8. When using flash, I usually have a Nikon SB600 mounted on a Stroboframe QuickFlip 350, attached with a SC28 cord. And in my little backyard studio - where I often photograph paintings and jewelry for local artists - I augment the SB600 with a couple of older Nikon flashes and various umbrellas and reflectors. It’s really simple to put together a small light kit using Nikon’s Commander mode which allows you to use the built-in flash to control various external flashes. Tripod - A Manfrotto (Bogen) 3021 with a 3265 pistol grip head. Some people (who shall remain nameless!) make fun of my old, out-of-date camera. And, of course I’d like to update what I have. There are always going to be new and better cameras and accessories. But for now, I’m happy with this outfit. It’s travelled all over the place with me, withstood salt spray and rain, been dropped a couple of times ...and it just keeps on working.

Camera #2 - Canon S3is My current “pocket camera” is a Canon S3is that I bought in December 2006.
6 megapixels, 12x optical zoom, Image Stabilization - with a full array of automatic and manual settings.I love it. But it’s been replaced by the S5is, and then the SX10is, and recently the SX20is. Each time they just get better. But still ... the S3is continues to amaze me. It’s outstanding in every way - with one exception: the electronic rangefinder is pretty grainy and contrasty (much improved on the newer models!). So you just have to compose and shoot - trusting that the real image is a lot better than what you’re seeing through the rangefinder. This is the camera I never go anywhere without! And did I mention that it also shoots really great video? It does!
